Amber Heard Files Notice Of Appeal In Johnny Depp Defamation Case Verdict

Amber Heard has officially filed a notice of appeal against the $10 million verdict that found her guilty of defaming her ex-husband Johnny Depp. Her lawyers filed the appeal on Thursday after a court in Virginia ruled in favor of Mr. Depp. The jury said that she had slandered the Pirates of the Caribbean actor with a 2018 article in the Washington Post. After the court found that Mr. Depp was also guilty of defamation, it also gave Ms. Heard $2 million.

According to Variety, Ms. Heard’s lawyers said they would file an appeal as soon as the jury decided on June 1 that she had slandered Mr. Depp with the op-ed in which she called herself a “public figure representing domestic abuse” and said she was a victim of abuse. The jury decided that the statement was made with “actual malice” because it was false.

“We think the court made mistakes that prevented a fair and just verdict that was in line with the First Amendment,” her spokesman said Thursday. “We are appealing the verdict because of this.” Even though we know that today’s filing will make Twitter explode, there are steps we need to take to make sure that justice and fairness are done.”

The two-paragraph notice doesn’t explain why Ms. Heard wants to appeal. In response, Mr. Depp’s lawyer said that his team is still sure that the verdict will stand. “We still believe in our case, and this verdict will stand,” a representative for him said.

In the defamation case, Ms. Heard asked for a new trial earlier this month, but the court in Virginia said no. Her lawyers asked Judge Penney Azcarate to throw out the verdict that gave Mr. Depp $10 million and call a new trial, but the judge said no.

Heard asked for a new trial because one of the seven jurors wasn’t the man who was called to serve on the jury. Instead, it was his son, who was mistakenly called to serve on the jury.

In June, a jury found that both Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard were guilty of defamation, but they sided more with the “Edward Scissorhands” star. The trial lasted six weeks and was based on accusations of domestic abuse that were hotly debated.
