The Astros will be without their starting second baseman for yet another game. What else is brand-new this year? Before Tuesday’s game, Houston left Jose Altuve off of the starting lineup. It’s the most recent challenge Altuve has faced in a season marred by injuries.
After breaking his thumb at the World Baseball Classic, the 2017 AL MVP has only participated in 32 games this season. When on the field, Altuve has performed as well as always does; his batting line of.264/.371/.479 earns him a 134 OPS+.
But the Astros, who are currently second in the AL West and three games behind the Rangers, have intensely felt the impact of his absence. Following his departure from Tuesday’s lineup, here is all you need to know about Altuve’s situation.
Jose Altuve Injury Update
Altuve was ruled out of Houston’s July 4 game against Colorado after appearing to tweak his left side or hip during batting practice. He was seen grimacing after taking a swing, after which he went to the clubhouse with bench coach Joe Espada.

The match on Tuesday kicked off at 4:10 PM ET. According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Altuve didn’t open the game with the Astros in the dugout.
Chandler Rome said by tweeting on Twitter:
Jose Altuve has been scratched from the Astros’ lineup. The Astros say “a medical update will be available on him later today.” Altuve appeared to injure himself during pregame batting practice. Went into the clubhouse with bench coach Joe Espada in the middle of his group

Per Rome, the Astros labelled Altuve’s injury as “left oblique discomfort.” After experiencing “something in his oblique” during a series against the Angels, he lost time last month.
After Tuesday’s game, Houston manager Dusty Baker informed the media that Altuve was undergoing tests. Rome reported Baker as saying, “He’s pretty upset.”
Altuve’s latest injury is a genuine concern for a Houston side already teeming with injuries. Altuve and slugger Yordan Alvarez have only started 13 games together this season.
As a result of various illnesses, Framber Valdez, Lance McCullers Jr., Luis Garcia, Jose Urquidy, Michael Brantley, and Jeremy Pena have missed considerable time or will do so in the future.
A power vacuum has developed at the top of the AL West due to the uncertainty surrounding the Astros’ roster. Texas is taking advantage, riding the outstanding performances of Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and others to the division lead.

Being only three games behind Houston in third place, the Angels, led by Shohei Ohtani and the injured Mike Trout, are within striking distance.
Astros fans will be hoping for the best for their tiny hero, especially with their division proving as tight as it has been in some time.
