Abbott Signs Sports Bill Targeting Transgender Students In Texas

On Monday, Greg Abbott Governor of Texas signed a law forbidding transsexual understudies from joining sports groups that line up with their sexual orientation character.

According to the new law, Students who are in K-12 grades have to play on the sports teams according to their gender that was assigned on their birth certificate. This rule will apply from Jan 18.

Valoree Swanson, who dictated the bill, said that  “she was “overjoyed” by Abbott’s decision to sign the bill into law, according to The Texas Tribune.”

“It’s so very, very important that we protect everything that women have gained in the last 50 years,” Swanson said.

She has earlier claimed that “the bill serves to uphold the principles of Title IX, which bans discrimination based on sex within the education system.”

At the beginning of this month, Swanson said”We need a statewide, level playing field,” and she added, “It’s very important that we, who got elected to be here, protect our girls.” According to NBC News. 

the Tribune noted, Advocates for transgender students have slammed the bill, saying that it is detrimental to the transgender community.
