After George Santos, a congressman-elect from New York, admitted to lying about his heritage, education, and professional career; a veteran Republican lawmaker said on Sunday that Santos should consider resigning from his position. This came despite the leadership of the House GOP remaining silent on the matter.
Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, who has been a member of Congress for the past 25 years and was once the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, stated on “Fox News Sunday” that in order for Santos to regain the trust and respect of the people in his district, he would need to “take some huge steps.” On Tuesday, when the new session of Congress opens, Santos will likely take the oath of office.
“This is problematic in a variety of different ways. “I do not doubt that he has lied on numerous occasions,” Brady, who is leaving his seat in the House of Representatives, said. “He is going to have no choice but to contemplate leaving his position seriously.” According to Brady, whether or not Santos will stand down is one that “must be decided between him and the voters who elected him.”
Santos, 34 years old, was chosen to represent the 3rd Congressional District in November. This district is located in New York City and includes a portion of the borough of Queens and some Long Island suburbs. He made history by being the first openly homosexual Republican to win a seat in Congress outside of an incumbent position.
But only a few short weeks after assisting Republicans in securing their razor-thin majority in the House, Santos is now the subject of an inquiry into allegations that he fabricated vast portions of his biography. His campaign finances are also being investigated at this time.
He has not demonstrated any symptoms of relinquishing his position. The previous week, Santos was confronted about the “blatant lies” on Fox News, and he reacted by saying that he had “made a mistake.”
Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, the top Republican in the House and a candidate for speaker of the House now that the GOP will command the majority, has not stated what action if any, he could take against Santos. McCarthy is running for speaker of the House now that the GOP will hold the majority. “Right now,” Brady stated, “he would not be on the committee” if he were in charge of the committee that Santos was supposed to serve on.
In addition to this, the congressman stated, “We’re a country of second chances.” And you know, we are willing to do that when people are willing to turn their lives around and own up to this and do what it takes in order to earn respect and trust again. Brady expressed his optimism that Santos would “make the right decision here.”
An inquiry into Santos’s resume revealed a number of significant inconsistencies, which led to the article’s publication. Since then, Santos has acknowledged lying about having Jewish ancestry, working for Wall Street banks, and receiving a college degree. He also lied about having worked for Wall Street banks.
It is anticipated that Democrats would pursue several different paths against Santos, including the possibility of filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission and the introduction of a resolution to remove him once he is a member of Congress in good standing.
