On Monday, a day after his 8-year-old sister died when the siblings were carried away by the current, a search team discovered the body of a 4-year-old boy in a raging California river.

According to a statement from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, searchers in a boat discovered the boy’s body in the Kings River about 1.75 miles (2.8 kilometers) downstream from where he and his sister entered the water. Due to the high water levels, the river is not open for recreational purposes.

Less than an hour after sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene on Sunday around 2 p.m., the girl was discovered ded.

About 40 rescue workers continued their search for her brother near Sanger, a city of about 26,000 people east of Fresno, using boats, a helicopter, and a drone. Pine Flat Dam is roughly 1.6 kilometers from Sanger.

The children’s names or the cause of their deths were not immediately made public by officials.

Not wearing life jackets, the children dove into the water while attempting to climb a rock with their mother and another adult.
